Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--As one of the civil contractors for China Three Gorges Group Corporation's (Yichang, Hubei) 13,860-megawatt (MW) Xiluodu Hydropower Station, the removal of the downstream cofferdam was kicked off by Sinohydro No.8 Engineering Bureau Company Limited (Baju) (Changsha, Hunan) at the Xiluodu dam site on October 28. The cofferdam has completed its purpose, and the Xiluodu Dam is ready to hold water.

Xiluodu Hydropower Station, located on the boundary of the Sichuan and Yunnan provinces on the Jinsha River, is a large-scale hydropower project built for primarily for power generation, with other benefits, including sediment control, flood control and navigation. The project is mainly comprised of a 278-meter-high concrete dam, spillway, and two underground powerhouses, each furnished with nine 770-MW hydraulic turbine generating units located on the right bank and left bank.

The cofferdam for the Xiluodu Dam successfully operated through four flood seasons. Upon the removal of the cofferdam, water will be discharged via the main dam and the second dam during the flood season in 2012.

The downstream cofferdam has a crest elevation of 407 meters above sea level. The removal of downstream cofferdam will be carried out along with the clearance of the diversion tunnel outlet, as well as the riverbed repair work. The removal of the downstream cofferdam is expected to be completed by the end of March 2012. According to the schedule, the upstream cofferdam will also begin to be removed in December this year, and the first unit of the project is expected to begin operations in July 2013.
