Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The National Inspection Team of Civil Nuclear Facilities, under the joint organization of the National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA), the National Energy Administration, the China Earthquake Administration, and the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Center under the Ministry of Environmental Protection, has conducted a nationwide nuclear safety inspection in China.
The safety inspection has been completed, and it is expected that the Nuclear Power Safety Inspection Report will be announced by the NNSA later this month.
Following the increasing concerns about nuclear safety after the incidents in Japan, the State Council of China decided to organize a nationwide safety inspection of the nuclear facilities in China and to suspend approval of new nuclear power plants on March 16, 2011.
In response to the decision of the State Council, the National Inspection Team was organized immediately and planned to conduct the inspection in three stages, each lasting about one month.
As reported, from mid-April to May 10, the National Inspection Team carried out safety inspections of the three nuclear power bases in Daya Bay of Shenzhen, Qinshan, in Zhejiang province, and Tianwan in Jiangsu province.
Upon completion of the inspection of operational facilities by the end of May, inspection for projects under construction will be launched immediately. Finally, nuclear power suppliers, equipment manufacturers and constructors will be inspected.
So far, the inspection is still under way, and no conclusion has been made yet, according to Yi Feng, the Deputy Secretary General of China Nuclear Energy Industry Association. Feng said that it is a rational and reasonable choice to suspend approval of new nuclear power plants prior to the official publication of the Nuclear Safety Planning and the Middle and Long-term Nuclear Power Development Planning.
In response to a previous report that the approval of nuclear power might be resumed in August this year, Feng said that the timetable for resumption of nuclear power approval remains unclear.
