Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--By the end of 2015, China will have eight large-scale, 10-gigawatt (GW) hydropower bases in operation, and the nation's annual hydropower output will reach 910 billion kilowatt-hours, according to the 12th Five-Year Plan for Renewable Energy, which will be published soon.

According to the plan, top priority will be given to hydropower. During the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15), China will begin construction on more than 60 large-scale hydropower stations.

Compared to the previous market prediction of six 10-GW hydropower bases, the new objective of eight bases aims high. Starting from the beginning of this year, the approvals process for hydropower projects has been accelerated. The clarification of new objectives for key hydropower projects indicates that hydropower development in China will be accelerated in all aspects.

As reported, more than 60 large-scale hydropower stations will kick off construction on the previously planned six 10-GW hydropower bases, namely along the Jinsha River, Yalong River, Dadu River, Lancang River, Nujiang River, the Yellow River, the Brahmaputra River and others.

More than 13 key hydropower stations, such as the Baihetan, Longpan and Wudongde hydropower projects will kick off construction on the Jinsha River; several key hydropower projects such as the Nuozadu, Dahuaqiao and Kagong projects will begin construction on the Lancang River. More than 40 key hydropower stations will be built on ither river valleys.

It's expected that the newly commissioned capacity of hydropower during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan will reach about 87.5 GW. About 52 GW of installed capacity will begin operation in the six large-scale hydropower bases, while the remaining 35.5 GW will be in other areas. By the end of 2015, the total installed capacity of conventional hydropower in China will reach about 284 GW, accounting for about 71% of the total exploitable capacity.
