Reported by Annette Kreuger, Pharmaceutical-Biotech Manager, Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). A sizeable delegation from China has joined the thousands of executives attending INTERPHEX2005, the pharmaceutical industry's foremost trade show being held this week at New York's Javits Convention Center. Anxious to hasten its development into a large-scale biotech and life science industrialization center, members of the group are taking full advantage of the unique opportunities at INTERPHEX2005 to discuss, touch, and test virtually every piece of equipment, product, and service that is essential to drug manufacturing.
The Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) is one of the top business zones in China. Founded twenty years ago, TEDA is one of the first economic development areas to be backed by the state government and is located only forty kilometers from Tianjin, China's third-largest city, with a population of ten million. According to Jack Liu, CEO of the TEDA-Watson Biopark, "We have a strong infrastructure in place now, with over 200,000 square feet of incubator space, featuring research laboratories and GMP pilot manufacturing areas."
"Currently, Biopark supports everything from molecular biology to drug testing and much more." Liu continues, "We have the government's strong support in our commercial efforts and have plans to eventually add a total of one million square feet of space at our park. Building is quite less expensive in China than it is here in the United States, and the entire expansion should cost no more than perhaps $20 million." In addition to fully equipped research and manufacturing space, TEDA-Watson Biopark offers a number of business services to tenants, including business plan formulation and support for initial start-up.
Mr. Liu expressed China's desire for the others to know about the viability of running a successful life science business in his country as he spoke about an upcoming bio conference being planned for this fall. "We want those from around the world involved with the life sciences to attend. They can see how much we have grown and how far we want to go with this."
Among both the Chinese delegation and the other estimated 16,000 attending INTERPHEX2005, there was an unabated openness and desire to touch the pulse of todays pharmaceutical industry. For the three days of this year's show, there is no better place on the planet to do so.
