China's Chongqing to Spend $653 Million in Wind Power Equipment Production

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). China's Chongqing municipality will invest millions of dollars in building wind power stations as well as a factory to produce equipments for wind power. Total investment in the equipment factory will amount to over $653 million within five years.

"We will invest one billion yuan [approximately $130 million] in the first phase construction of the wind power production base, with capacity of producing equipment of 1 million kW a year," said the chairman of the board of Chongqing Haizhuang Company (Chongqing), which was set up by Chongqing Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (a company affiliated to China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Beijing)) and Chongqing Qianwei Meters Company (Chongqing), to be in charge of the whole project.

The production base, located in northern Chongqing, will receive the $130 million investment this year, with another $522 million to be invested in three to five years. When the factory is put to use, it will be capable of producing 100 sets of wind power generating equipments. Huang Qifan, deputy mayor of Chongqing, said the company will invite overseas companies in designing 2 MW wind power generating units.

Also in Chongqing, 20 wind power plants are planned to be finished within five years, to make the most of the local advantages in its abundant wind energy, addressing the scarce shortage of electricity in the central province level city.

Wind power is also a key area in which China plans to develop its alternative energy projects, with an aim of developing total capacity of 4 million kw to 50 million kw within a decade, in order to avoid the air from deteriorating drastically, especially in cities like Chongqing where air flow is hindered by its surrounding mountains.

Chongqing, a province level city set in 1997 to promote the development of Western China, faces many environmental problems brought by natural conditions and fast economic development. It has recently granted its environmental watch-dog more power and vowed to address its environmental problems by using clean power.
