China's CNEC Awards Construction Contracts for Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The signing ceremony for the erection and construction contract for the conventional islands and part of the balance of plant for units 1 and 2 of the Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant was held in Guangzhou on August 23, 2011.

The contract was signed by Zhongjian Wu, the vice president of China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (CNEC) (Beijing), which is the general contractor for the project and a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) (Beijing), and Chengye Liu, the general manager of Guangdong Thermal Power Engineering Corporation (GTPEC) (Guangzhou, Guangdong).

Mingjun Jin, the project general manager of CNEC; Xinhua Yu, the vice director of the Commerce Department of CNEC; Xuehan Bai, the deputy general manager of GTPEC; and other related leaders and representatives from China Southern Power Grid and Guangdong Power Grid attended the ceremony.

The Changjiang Nuclear Power Project is located in Tangxing Village, Haiwei Town, in the Changjiang Li Nationality Autonomous Region of China's Hainan province. The project is jointly invested by CNNC (51%) and China Huaneng Group (Beijing) (49%). The project has a total planned capacity of four large-scale nuclear power units. Of which, two of CNNC's 650-megawatt (MW) CNP650 pressurized water reactors will be built in Phase I, requiring a total investment of more than $3 billion.

Construction of both units was officially kicked off in 2010. According to the schedule, units 1 and 2 will be put into operation in a space of 10 months in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Upon the completion of Phase I, the project could generate about 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, which could greatly reduce the construction of coal-fired units, and hence reduce the emission of pollutants from coal-fired power plants in Hainan.
