Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--At of the end of October 2011, China's installed of wind power capacity that is connected to the grid reached 39.13 gigawatts (GW), an increase of 60.9% year over year, according to a report recently issued by China Electricity Council.
However, problems with hydropower generation are quite serious. Due to the advanced arrival of China's dry season, the storage levels of key reservoirs in major river valleys are very low. Therefore, the expected power output from hydropower will be largely reduced this winter.
According to the analysis, from January to October 2011, the power output of on-grid windfarms with a capacity of 6 megawatts (MW) or more reached 58.25 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 56.87% year over year. The power output of on-grid windfarms with capacity at 6 MW or above reached 6.57 billion kilowatt-hours in October 2011, an increase of 45.48% year over year.
Investments in windfarms dropped slightly. Statistics show that China's investment in power sector reached $80.82 billion from January through October 2011. Of this, the investment in power source construction reached $41.82 billion. Among the investment in power source projects, the infrastructure investment in hydropower and nuclear power rose 25.8% and 26.2% respectively; that of thermal power and wind power dropped 17.9% and 14% year over year, respectively.
From January through October 2011, the total installed capacity of newly commissioned power plants in China added to 60.37 GW, which was 3.66 GW higher than the same period of previous year. The newly commissioned capacity starting from the third quarter was about 3.3 GW over the same period of previous year. However, the capacity of newly kicked-off power units was reduced by 13.22 GW year over year. Of which, the installed capacity of newly kicked off thermal power declined 14.43 GW, a drop of 49.4% year over year. As of the end of October 2011, the capacity of thermal power units under construction was reduced by 21.22 GW, a drop of 24.9% year over year.
