China's Largest Hydropower Constructor to Build Nine Stations in Southwest China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Sinohydro Corporation, China's largest hydropower constructor, signed a strategic cooperative development agreement with Sichuan Aba County Government to build nine hydropower stations at Xiao Jinzhuan Valley and Jiao Muzu River, in Aba County of Sichuan province, in southwest China.

According to the agreement, the installed capacity of these nine hydropower stations will total 2,000 megawatts (MW), and construction of the first batch is expected to finish within three to five years. Together, the two signatory parties will invest 20 billion yuan (US$3.07 billion) on the project.

Insiders revealed that this project is part of the post-quake reconstruction launched by Aba County's government to help local people and enterprises recover from the traumatic earthquake which hit Sichuan on May 1, 2008. When this project is brought online, Aba County will see 60% more hydropower generating capacity. At present, total installed capacity of Aba County's hydropower stations is less than 23,000 MW, accounting for only a tiny portion of Aba County's hydropower potential.

Sinohydro Corporation is China's largest hydropower construction and water conservation company, and is under direct management of state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) of China. Sinohydro Corporation has been commissioned with the construction of 70% of China's large- and small-size hydropower stations.

The most recent statistics show that Sinohydro Corporation's total assets are worth of 82 billion yuan (US$12.61 billion) and that the company owns 18 subsidiaries, partially owns 10 more companies, and has overseas agencies in 47 other countries. Sinohydro Corporation has stakes in 6,670 MW in hydropower facilities, and the company's attributable installed capacity is 4,020 MW.

Sinohydro Corporation ranked 50th in the globe's top-225 international contractors, was fourth among Chinese contractors in overseas revenues, and ranked 84th among the top-500 Chinese companies, according to statistics released in 2008. The company is rated as AAA by the Chinese rating agency and provides jobs for 130,000 employees.
