China's Power Consumption Up 7.2% in September

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In September 2017, China's overall power consumption reached 531.7 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), a 7.2% increase from September 2016, and 0.8 percentage points higher than August 2017, according to China's National Energy Administration. From January to September 2017, China's total power consumption reached 4.69 trillion kWh, a 6.9% increase from the same period last year.

The growth mainly comes from the secondary and tertiary industries. In September 2017, power consumption in the first industry (agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, and oil & gas production) reached 10.8 billion kWh, a 3% increase from September 2016; the second industry (manufacturing) reached 342.1 billion kWh, a 5.1% increase; the third industry (services) reached 83.5 billion kWh, an 11.9% increase; and households in urban and township areas totaled 95.3 billion kWh, an 11.7% increase.

From January to September 2017, China's total power consumption in the first industry reached 91.1 billion kWh, a 7.8% increase from the same period last year; the second industry reached 3.26 trillion kWh, a 6% increase; the third industry reached 665.9 billion kWh, a 10.5% increase; and households in urban and township areas totaled 668.8 billion kWh, a 7.5% increase.

In September 2017, China's power output totaled 521.96 billion kWh, a 5.3% increase from the same month last year, which was 0.5 percentage points higher than the growth in August 2017, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics. The output from thermal power reached 362.3 billion kWh, a 0.5% drop, which was the first drop since June 2016; hydropower reached 112.2 billion kWh, an 18.6% jump; and nuclear power, wind power and solar power were up 21.9%, 36.8% and 25.2%, respectively.

From January to September 2017, China's accumulative power output reached 4.69 trillion kWh, a 6.4% increase from the same period in 2016, and the daily average power output reached 17.3 billion kWh. The proportion of nuclear power, wind power and solar power in total output was 1.1 percentage points higher than in the same period in 2016. Higher growth in hydropower squeezed the growth space for thermal power.

China's overall power consumption is expected to grow from 6% to 7% in 2017, which will be about 1% to 2% higher than the previous year.
