Chinese Firm Installing Pipe Mill in Former Plastics Plant Near Houston Ship Channel

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Houston OCTG Group Incorporated (Houston, Texas), a subsidiary of Wuxi, China-based WSP Holdings Limited is renovating the former 336,000-square-foot Howard Industries plastics compounding plant at 13500 Industrial Road in Houston, Texas. The plant has rail access and is located near the Houston Ship Channel. Electrical upgrades, parking lot improvements and building modifications are currently under way, and the company hopes to begin installing equipment in August. The new mill will process, thread, heat treat and inspect oil country tubular goods. The mill should be up and operating by the fourth quarter of 2009. There is talk that the company may expand in the future, but this really depends on market conditions.

The Houston OCTG project is one of a number of active steel pipe and tubing mill projects funded by international companies in the U.S. Last year, TPCO Enterprise Incorporated (Houston, Texas), a subsidiary of Tianjin Pipe Corporation, China's largest seamless steel pipe maker, announced plans to build an integrated steel mill and 550,000-ton-per-year seamless pipe mill in Gregory, Texas. If all goes according to plan, TPCO Enterprise could begin construction of the $1 billion mill in May 2010.
