Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Demand for natural gas-generated energy may hit record highs this summer, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Cianbro Corporation (Pittsfield, Maine) and Welded Construction LP (Perrysburg, Ohio) are among the many engineering companies at work on natural gas and natural gas liquid (NGL) pipelines, including two major projects that have experienced different fortunes in the past few weeks: the Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline Expansion and the Mariner East 2 and 2X projects. Industrial Info is tracking $1.25 billion in active projects involving Cianbro and $1.83 billion involving Welded Construction.

Williams Companies Incorporated's (NYSE:WMB) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline Expansion in Pennsylvania got a boost earlier this month when the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved additional service on the natural gas pipeline. The new lines will transport up to 1.7 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas from Susquehanna County to Transcontinental Gas Pipeline's mainline in Lancaster County; it is designed to shorten the transport distance between two points on the Transcontinental's interstate system.

Welded Construction is serving as general contractor on Atlantic Sunrise's $200 million Central Penn North and $283 million Central Penn South segments, which run 53.3 miles and 122.2 miles, respectively. The northern portion is 32 inches in diameter, and the southern is 42 inches. Welded Construction also is at work on a related 14.5-mile, $200 million loop in Pennsylvania. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Central Penn North, Central Penn South and the loop.

Cianbro is serving as general contractor on two other aspects of the Atlantic Sunrise Pipeline: $45 million in additions to Compressor Station 517 in Benton, Pennsylvania, and $45 million in additions to Compressor Station 520 in Salladasburg, Pennsylvania. The projects involve the installation of 16,000-horsepower and 15,000-horsepower turbine-driven compressor gas packages, respectively, among other features. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Station 517 and Station 520.

Energy Transfer Partners LP's (NYSE:ETP) (Dallas, Texas) Mariner East 2 and 2X Pipelines also employs both companies, but hit a major snag last week when the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission granted a request to stop construction on both, as well as halt flows on the existing Mariner East 1 NGL pipeline, so additional studies can be conducted on the geology in West Whiteland Township. The parallel lines are designed to transport 272,750 barrels per day (BBL/d) of NGL from the Utica and Marcellus shales to the Marcus Hook terminal near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the NGLs will be processed into butane, propane and other products for export.

Welded Construction is serving as general contractor on the 315-mile, $1 billion Pennsylvania segment, as well as the 25-mile, $75 million Ohio segment and the seven-mile, $15 million West Virginia segment. The Mariner East 2 line is 20 inches in diameter, and Mariner East 2X is 16 inches. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia segments.

As with Atlantic Sunrise, Cianbro is serving as general contractor on auxiliary expansions on the new Mariner East lines: $50 million in additions at a pump station near Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, and $50 million in additions at a pump station near Middletown, Pennsylvania. Each expansion involves constructing buildings and installing a pair of 4,500-horsepower, centrifugal pump packages and other equipment to support the parallel lines. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Ebensburg and Middletown stations.

Welded Construction's other projects include TransCanada Corporation's (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta) $40 million Spread 1 on the Mountaineer XPress Pipeline in West Virginia, which runs 32 miles through the state's distinctive, narrow northern panhandle. The line is designed to carry up to 2.7 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas from Marshall County to Wetzel County, and is expected to wrap up late this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Cianbro's other projects cover a wide spectrum, including the Food & Beverage, Alternative Fuels and Power Generation industries. The latter includes a pair of wind-energy facilities in the northeastern U.S.: Walden Green Energy's (New York, New York) $120 million Big Level Windfarm in Ulysses, Pennsylvania, which is expected to generate 90 megawatts (MW) from 25 turbines, and the University of Maine's (Orono, Maine) $51.9 million New England Aqua Ventus I Offshore Windfarm, a pilot project that will generate 12 MW from a pair of turbines.

Partners in the University of Maine's project include Emera Incorporated (TSX:EMA) (Halifax, Nova Scotia); they hope the pilot project's floating technology will be applied in future commercial projects. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Big Level and Ventus I windfarms.
