Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Cordoba, Argentina)--Companhia Industrial de Cimento Apodi (Fortaleza, Brazil) is moving forward with the construction of a new integrated cement plant to attend to the growing demand in the cement market in northern Brazil. The new facility will be located in the city of Quixere, some 220 kilometers from the Ceara´s state capital, Fortaleza.

The grassroot project is expected to be worth about $300 million and entails the construction of an open-pit limestone quarry and an integrated cement plant in the same site. The project is being developed in two stages. For Phase I, which represents a third part of the investment, the plant will start operating a 250 ton-per-hour cement mill. Civil works for the first stage have begun, and the completion is expected by mid-2013.

For the second stage of the project, the company will add another 250 ton-per-hour cement mill and a 3,500 ton-per-day clinker kiln. Construction for Phase II expected to start in the second semester of 2013, with plant commissioning by the end of 2014. All the main equipment for the project will be supplied by L.V. Technology Public Company Limited (Bangkok, Thailand). Once the whole project is completed, 600 employees will be working at the new facility.

Cimento Apodi currently operates a 540,000 ton-per-year cement grinding mill in the city of Caucaia, in the Pecem Industrial Complex, also in the state of Ceara. The clinker to be produced by the Quixere plant, which is under construction, also will feed the Caucaia grinding mill, allowing the company to stop importing the raw material from the Chinese market.
