CLP Holdings Adds 113.6-Megawatt Indian Windfarm to Renewable Portfolio

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--CLP Holdings Limited (OTC:CLPHY) (Hong Kong), the largest electricity investor-operator in the Asia-Pacific region, has announced plans to set up a 113.6-megawatt (MW) windfarm in Maharashtra called the Andhra Lake Project. The windfarm, the fourth of its kind in the country by CLP, will be the largest wind project undertaken by the company, enhancing its renewable energy portfolio to over 1,000 MW.

CLP Wind Farms (India) Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the CLP Group in India, in collaboration with Enercon (India) Limited (EIL) (Mumbai), will construct the farm at an estimated cost of $160 million. EIL is a subsidiary of Enercon GmbH (Aurich, Germany), the third largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world. The Andhra Lake greenfield power project is slated to begin at the end of 2009 and will be operational by July 2010. The project constitutes building and erecting of 142 wind turbines with a capacity of 800 kilowatts each.

Hong Kong-based CLP developed a 50.4-MW windfarm project in Khandke in the state of Maharashtra in December 2006. The following year, CLP commissioned a 100.8-MW windfarm project in Gujarat and an 82.4-MW wind project in Karnataka. All these projects were executed in cooperation with EIL. CLP is the largest foreign investor in India's power sector.

CLP has an impressive renewable energy portfolio in the country. The Andhra Lake project will be a significant contribution in meeting targets set by the company for its Climate Vision 2050. Of the company's total power, 5% of its generating capacity comes from renewable energy sources such as small hydropower projects, wind and biomass. The company has a strong presence in Australia, China and India for executing renewable energy projects.

In China, the integrated electricity company has executed a number of projects on its own and through Roaring 40s (Hobart, Tasmania). Roaring 40s, a joint venture with equal partnership between Hydro Tasmania (Hobart) and the CLP Group, is committed to executing wind energy projects in Australia and China. The company claims the distinction of being the largest foreign wind energy developer in China. CLP, in collaboration with China Huaneng Group, commissioned the 27.2-MW Changdao wind farm in Yantai, Shandong province in China. In addition, windfarms were developed at Weihai I, Nanao, and Shuangliao in China.

An offshore wind farm project is expected to be developed in eastern Hong Kong. The feasibility study of the project is already in progress. This is the first time that the practicality of wind power generation in Hong Kong is being assessed and carried out by any power player.
