Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The dome erection ceremony for Unit 1 of China National Nuclear Corporation's (CNNC) (Beijing) Changjiang nuclear power project was held in Changjiang County, Hainan Province, on December 28, 2011. Guobao Zhang, director of the National Energy Consulting Experts Commission and other leaders and representatives, attended the ceremony, the CNNC announced on December 30.
During the ceremony, the dome was placed in its final position. This marks that Unit 1 has successfully achieved this important milestone 28 days ahead of schedule, and construction has shifted from civil construction to the mechanical installation stage.
Changjiang Nuclear Power Station, located at Tangxing Village, Haiwei Town of Changjiang Li Nationality Autonomous Region in south China's Hainan province, is jointly invested by CNNC and China Huaneng Group (Beijing), one of the top five power producers in China. The power station has a total planned capacity of four large-scale nuclear power units. Of which, two 650-megawatt (MW) pressurized water reactor-based Chinese-made nuclear power units will be built in the initial stage with a total investment of more than $3 billion.
The project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission on April 7, 2010. The project is adopted with the "improved second generation" of nuclear power technology with reference to the Qinshan Nuclear Power Phase II project. China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (CNPE) (Beijing), a subsidiary of the CNNC, served as the general contractor for the project. Construction of units 1 and 2 was officially kicked off in April 2010 and November 2010, respectively. As of the end of November, 96% of the equipment for the project has been ordered, or is ready to be ordered. Manufacturing of the main equipment is progressing smoothly. According to the schedule, Unit 1 is expected to begin operations by the end of 2014, and Unit 2 is expected to begin commercial operations in 2015. Upon completion, the project could generate about 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year.
