Codelco to Reduce Scope 3 Emissions 25% by 2030

Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Codelco (Santiago, Chile) expects to limit its scope 3 emissions as part of its plan to reduce its total carbon footprint by 70% by 2030.

Codelco, Chile's state mining company, announced that it plans to reduce its scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030. Scope 3 emissions refer to greenhouse gas emissions generated by assets not owned or controlled by the company but that indirectly affect its operations, such as the transport of materials, services or the sale and processing of cathodes by the final client.

Among the policies implemented to achieve this goal is the electrification of workers' transport, which is expected to reach 40% by 2030 and 100% by 2040. As part of this goal, the Salvador division is only using electric buses to transport its employees.

The plan also includes emissions reduction in maritime transport, though the company did not provide details.

Codelco will aim to decrease the carbon footprint of other materials used in operations such as explosives, refractors, and lubricants. For example, the company has agreed to utilize ammonium nitrate blue explosives, which have a 40% lower carbon emission, at the Radomiro Tomic division.

Also to reduce scope 3 emissions, Codelco signed a five-year contract with Magotteaux Andino (Tiltil, Chile) for a pilot project to produce new grinding balls from worn-out balls and metallic residue, reducing carbon-dioxide emissions from the El Teniente division by 40,000 tons per year.

Reducing scope 3 emissions is key to the company's target of reducing its carbon footprint by 70% by 2030.

"At Codelco, we are committed to driving change toward more sustainable mining. We have been part of the development of capabilities in the industry and now we are taking a decisive step to collaborate beyond our operations, integrating suppliers, customers and our entire value chain in the global challenge of decarbonization," said Pablo Contreras, Codelco's manager for climate action.
