Colbun Reschedules Startup Date for Chile's Santa Maria I Coal-Fired Power Station

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Colbun SA (Santiago, Chile) has announced that the Santa María I coal-fired power station will begin operating in the second quarter this year.

The startup date has been postponed for the third time for the power station, which is located in region VII of Chile. The first postponement was due to damage from the 2010 earthquake. After that, delays in the project's construction, performed by a joint venture between Maire Tecnimont SpA and Slovenske Energeticke Strojarne, Colbun was forced to set a new startup date for March this year. However, the plant is still in a commissioning phase. The facility will be equipped with a 342-megawatt (MW) General Electric (NYSE:GE) RH-D5 steam turbine generator set attached to a SES Tlmace AS dry-bottom boiler. Construction kicked off in 2007.

There are 12 coal-fired power projects currently being developed in Chile, requiring a combined investment of approximately $7 billion. Of these, two are in the engineering phase, four are in the construction phase, and six are in the planning phase. Some of the largest are the 740-MW Punta Alcalde coal-fired power station, the 152-MW Guacolda coal-fired unit addition, and the 750-MW Mejillones coal-fired unit addition.

Coal-fired power generation accounts for 20% of Chile's installed base capacity, while hydro and natural gas represent around 33% and 28% of the base capacity, respectively.
