ConocoPhillips Oklahoma Refinery Crude Unit Replacement

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas) began the in situ replacement of the 30,000 barrel per day crude topping unit 4. Safety concerns have driven officials to replace the 80 year-old riveted crude towers. The project scope does not include plans to increase the capacity. The company expects to spend around $10 million for the sweet crude replacement.

The unit was shutdown in the beginning of May. It should have the unit erected, tied-in, and back on-stream by October 2007. Currently, ConocoPhillips is taking the necessary steps to begin the 30-day process of dismantling the unit. Timec Company, Incorporated (Carson, California) has been hired to provide construction services.

Although there are no plans for expansion on this project, ConocoPhillips is considering a refinery expansion in the near future which will increase the crude processing capacity of Ponca City. The refinery processes 187,000 barrels per day of crude oil and ships refined products to markets throughout the Mid-continent region. It is the largest refinery in Oklahoma and employs approximately 650 people.
