Construction Begins on 10-Megawatt Windfarm at Valero Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction began in October on the 10-megawatt (MW) McKee I windfarm at the McKee refinery, owned by Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) (San Antonio, Texas) just north of Amarillo, Texas. Construction is expected to be complete before year's end. Signal Wind Energy (Chattanooga, Tennessee) is the contractor. Six foundations have been poured and the equipment has been ordered.

Valero also is planning Phase II of the windfarm. The second phase will produce 50 MW and is expected to be operational by 2010. Valero's attempt to become a "greener" entity will balance out the company's carbon footprint from the refinery's electrical usage, but not the emissions released to the atmosphere from the refinery.
