Construction of China Huadian's 2,000-Megawatt Power Project Begins in Shandong

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Following approval from the National Development and Reform Commission on January 29, 2010, construction of Huadian Power International Limited's (SHA:600027) (HDPI) (Beijing) Laizhou Power Generation Company (Laizhou, Shandong) Phase I project was officially kicked off in Jincheng Town, Laizhou City, in the Shandong province on March 20. Daming Jiang, governor of Shandong province and other leaders and representatives attended the kick-off ceremony.

The project is a key power project with a total planned capacity of 8,000 megawatts (MW). Two 1,000-MW ultra-supercritical units will be built in Phase I. This is the first 1,000-MW ultra-supercritical project built in the Yellow River Delta. This is also the first 1,000-MW coal-fired project to receive approval in China's replacing smaller, less effiecient plants with ones that are larger and more efficient. Upon completion, the project could have an annual power output of 11 billion kilowatt-hours and will become an important power source for the development of the Bohai Bay Economic Zone, as well as the Yellow River Delta Economic Zone.

The coal consumption for power generation will be 268.5 grams per kilowatt-hour, which is nearly 70 grams per kilowatt-hour less than the national average. The project will be sited in saline, coastal soils and will use an abandoned open-air gold mine as an ash field, so that no arable land will be used. The project will also adopt highly efficient electrostatic dust-removers that can remove more than 99.85% of dust. Elements used for desulfurization and all wastewater will be recovered and re-utilized. The project will achieve zero-waste, said Gongmin Yun, general manager of China Huadian Corporation, at the ceremony.

As the listed flagship of China Huadian Corporation, HDPI currently has a total installed capacity of 24,548 MW.
