After years of delays, Steel Dynamics Incorporated (Nasdaq: STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) is proceeding with construction of a $360 million structural steel and rail mill in Columbia City, Indiana. The company began site studies for the new mill in 1997 and site selection was made in the middle of 1998.

However, several factors including permitting delays and legal issues slowed engineering and construction efforts during 1999 and 2000. Final permits were received in April of 2001 and construction is proceeding. The major buildings should be erected by the end of the year and equipment will be installed next year, with plant start-up expected late 2002.
