Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Leading foodservice distributor U.S. Foodservice (Rosemont, Illinois) has begun construction on a facility east of Buda, Texas, for its Austin division. Groundbreaking took place in September at the 40-acre site after a long battle involving lawsuits from local residents who opposed the project. When completed in October 2011, the new distribution center will replace the current center in east Austin, which dates back to the 1960s. Estimated at $50 million, the new facility is expected to increase its current workforce of 250 to more than 400 over the next decade.
Designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED certification requirements for commercial buildings, which cover a number of environmental metrics, the state-of-the-art, 290,000-square-foot facility's environmentally friendly features will include energy-efficient lighting and no-water landscaping, among others. The facility was designed and is being built by ESI Group USA (Hartland, Wisconsin).
The new location adds 100,000 additional square feet of warehouse space to the division's current 184,000-square-foot footprint and leaves plenty of room for future growth, with the potential to add up to 200,000 additional square feet to the facility.
U.S. Foodservice is one of the country's leading foodservice distributors, offering more than 43,000 national, private label and signature brand items and an array of services to more than 250,000 customers, which include neighborhood restaurants, hospitals, schools, colleges, universities, hotels, government entities and other eating establishments.
