Corpoelec Fires Up 15-Megawatt Thermoelectric Power Plant in Venezuela

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Las Hernandez I, the thermoelectric power plant operated by Venezuela's state-owned Corporacion Electrica Nacional (Corpoelec), began operations in January.

The facility, located on Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta state, is equipped with eight Tognum AG (ETR:TGM) (Freidrichshafen, Germany) diesel units, rated at 1.875 megawatts (MW) each, for a total output of 15 MW. The power plant has a 20 megavolt-ampere transformer that serves five circuits and operates under network mode.

This plant is part of the project developed by the Mission Energy Revolution, which before the end of 2010 will provide 1,000 MW of electricity. The addition is expected to solve some of the problems caused by water shortages in Venezuela's hydroelectric power plants as a result of weather patterns caused by El Niño.

Mission Energy Revolution aims to achieve energy efficiency through energy rationing and the use of alternative sources to increase the reliability and quality of the electricity service in the country.

The launch of Las Hernandez I provides security, flexibility and energy efficiency to 7,000 families in the area around the plant.

At the moment, there are 17 operational power plants for distributed generation, and 26 remain to begin operating. With the addition of these new facilities, by the end of this year, there will be a total of 404 MW remaining to complete the program.
