CTGC to Prepare for Construction of Two Mega-Hydro Projects Downstream on Jinsha River

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Following the beginning of construction for the Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba mega-hydropower projects, which are downstream on Jinsha River, China Three Gorges Group Corporation (CTGC) (Yichang, Hubei) received consent from the National Development and Reform Commission to begin construction preparation for two more mega-hydro projects in the same area: the Wudongde Hydropower Station and Baihetan Hydropower Station.

Wudongde Hydropower Station, which is at the boundary of Lvquan County in the Yunnan province and Huidong County in the Sichuan province, is the first cascade project planned downstream on Jinsha River. The project has a total planned installation capacity of 8,700 megawatts (MW), with a designed annual output of 38.71 billion kilowatt-hours. The project is mainly comprised of a 240-meter-high, double-coverture arch dam with a total reservoir capacity of 7.4 billion cubic meters. CTGC won the development rights for the project in 2002 and has mandated HydroChina Xibei Engineering Corporation (Xi'an, Shaanxi) and Changjiang Institute of Survey, Planning, Design and Research (Wuhan, Hubei) for the survey and design of the project since 2003. The preliminary feasibility study report was approved by an expert panel organized by the National Energy Administration (NEA) in May 2010.

Baihetan Hydropower Station, which is at the boundary of Qiaojia County in the Yunnan province and Ningnan County in the Sichuan province, is the second cascade project planned downstream on the Jinsha River, connecting Wudongde Project in the upstream and Xiluodu Project in the downstream. The project has a total planned installation capacity of 12,000 MW, with a designed annual output of 51.5 billion kilowatt-hours. The project is mainly comprised of a 277-meter-high arch dam, with a total reservoir capacity of 17.9 billion cubic meters under the normal pool level of 820 meters above sea level and an underground hydropower plant furnished with 16 units each of 750 MW. In June 2006, CTGC awarded the general contract to HydroChina Huadong Engineering Corporation (Hangzhou, Zhejiang) for the construction of a 26-kilometer access road to the site. The feasibility study for the project is expected to be completed in middle of 2011. The first unit of the project is expected to begin operation in June 2020, and the whole project will be completed in 2022.
