Cumberland Coal Plant Forced Offline for Repairs

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 2,600-megawatt (MW) Cumberland Power Station in Cumberland, Tennessee, which is owned by Tennessee Valley Authority (NYSE:TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee), has been shut down due to issues with both of the facility's units.

Plant officials say that Unit 2 was forced offline September 25 because of a turbine speed circuit sensor malfunction. The unit had returned online a few days earlier because of a related issue, which had taken the unit offline September 20. Officials also said that it tripped in the early hours of September 30 because of an electrical control issue, but that Unit 1 should be ready to return online in early hours of October 1.

They confirmed that the repairs are ongoing with Unit 2, but that the unit is projected to return online October 2, if there are no delays. The plant has two generating units and a total generating capacity of 2,600 megawatts when at full load. Units 1 and 2 began operating in 1973.

The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states at prices below the average. It acts primarily as an electric power wholesaler, selling to 156 retail power distributors and 56 directly served industrial or government customers. Power comes from dams providing hydroelectric power, fossil fuel plants, nuclear power plants, combustion turbines, wind turbines and solar panels.
