Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Datang International Power Generation Company, Limited (0991.HKEx) (Beijing, China), Chinas second-largest Hong Kong-listed power producer, has entered into an investment agreement with China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (GNPG) (Shenzhen, China) for the construction of the first phase of a three-phased nuclear power station that will have a total of 6,000 megawatts, located in the city of Ningde in Chinas Fujian Province. The $2.9 billion, phase-I 2,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power station will be shared with China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group owning 51% and Datang International Power Generation Company owning the remaining 49%. Datang International Power said the project would enhance the company's market share in the Southeast China power market, where energy development prospects are doing well. The project will also serve as a pivotal electricity source to the region, which is undergoing rapid economic growth during recent years, and will help with the recent coal shortage that the Fujian and surrounding provinces have recently been experiencing.
The project will involve the construction of two 1,000-megawatt pressurized nuclear reactors (PWR) utilizing the so-called Chinese standard 3-loop pressurized water technology design, which happens to be the preferred nuclear technology for the construction of present and future Chinese nuclear power plants for the region. At present, Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC (Monroe, Pennsylvania) and AREVA (NYSE:FR:CEI ) (Paris, France) are the two candidates that are vying for the construction of the project. The power plant will consist of two identical containment structures housing the reactor vessels where the fuel rod (uranium) (3.5 meters in diameter and11.48 feet long) assemblies are located. The reactor vessel also contains the moderators, main reactor coolant pumps and is where the main nuclear reaction takes place. Outside the reactor vessel is where the steam turbine generators (500 MW each), heat exchangers, condensers, and part of the cooling system are located. The power station will also consist of the very best environmental emissions monitoring system available in the market today plus a highly effective filtering, ventilation & spent fuel area and wastewater treatment system.
Construction has been scheduled to begin during the first half of 2007, with commercial operation slated for the first quarter of 2013. IIR will continue to monitor this power project and the remaining two phases as they go through the various stages of development.
