Deepwater Wind Invests $1.5 Billion in Rhode Island Offshore Windfarms

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Deepwater Wind Rhode Island LLC (Providence, Rhode Island), a subsidiary of Deepwater Wind LLC (Hoboken, New Jersey), is developing two offshore windfarms with a total capacity of up to 424.8 megawatts (MW). The windfarms are expected to come online between 2012 and 2015.

The first project is a pilot project known as the Great Salt Pond Offshore Windfarm. The windfarm is off the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island. The facility is expected to have eight wind turbine/generators of approximately 3.6 MW each for a total of 28.8 MW. Construction is expected to commence in 2011 and is scheduled to finish the following year. The estimated total investment value (TIV) for the project is $200 million.

The second project is the Newport Offshore Windfarm, a full-scale windfarm that is expected to have a generating capacity of 360 MW to 396 MW. The windfarm will use the same style turbine/generator as the other project. The Newport Offshore Windfarm is expected to be between 15 and 25 miles south of Little Compton, Rhode Island. Estimated TIV for the project is $1.3 billion. The windfarm is scheduled for completion in 2014 or 2015.
