Design Consultant Awarded for Light Rail Expansion in Texas

Phase I will involve the construction of 10.2 miles of light rail for the Southeast-Corridor, which includes eight stations. This will also include a line section of the Northwest Corridor, which entails an additional four miles of light rail and includes two stations. The Southeast Corridor will expand the transit system from the Pearl Street Station (Downtown) to Elam Road (South) connecting downtown Dallas, Deep Ellum, Fair Park, South Dallas, and Pleasant Grove.

A general contractor for Phase I will be selected in the early summer of 2005. Construction for Phase I will begin in the spring of 2006, with completion in 2008. DART is currently awaiting a Record of Decision (ROD) from the Federal Trade Administration (FTA) to proceed with the final design.

Phase II, valued at approximately $900 million will begin construction in 2007 and will involve the remainder of the Northwest Corridor and include fourteen miles of light rail and eleven stations. Completion for Phase II is anticipated for 2009. Carter and Burgess is currently providing design for Phase II as well. Phase II will expand the transit system from Downtown Dallas to Frankford Road in Carrollton, Texas.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is a regional transit agency created by voters and funded with a one-cent local sales tax on August 13, 1983. The service area consists of 13 member cities: Addison, Carrollton, Cockrell Hill, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Garland, Glenn Heights, Highland Park, Irving, Plano, Richardson, Rowlett, and University Park. It is governed by a 15-member board appointed by member-city councils based on population. DART currently serves the 13 cities with approximately 130 bus routes, 44 miles of light rail transit (DART Rail), 31 freeway miles of high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, and paratransit service for the mobility impaired. DART and the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (the T) jointly operate 35 miles of commuter rail transit (the Trinity Railway Express or TRE), linking downtown Dallas and Fort Worth, with stops in the Mid-cities and DFW International Airport.
