Developers Sought for Mine Mouth Power Plants in Alaska

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Usibelli Coal Company, Incorporated (Fairbanks, Alaska) at the turn of the century performed feasibility studies at locations near its Healy and Palmer sites to show the viability of new power plants using Clean Coal Technology. Usibelli has indicated they have no plans to build these themselves as they are in the mining business and do not want to wander out into the realm of power generation. This study has multiple incentives: creation of temporary and permanent jobs both at mine and power plants; additional cheap clean electricity for the grid and mine, in addition to providing a less expensive source for the mine.

The proposed scope for each plant is for two atmospheric circulating fluidized-bed boilers and auxiliaries to drive a single steam turbine/generator that would provide electricity and steam to the mines and electricity to the local grid. Developers that may choose to develop project will already have some of the preliminary studies completed and should therefore be able to move ahead more quickly with construction and operation. These projects could possibly be permitted and built for operation by 2013.
