Diversion Tunnel at SDIC's Jinping II Hydropower Station Passes Run-Through Trial in Sichuan

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Diversion Tunnel No. 2 at Ertan Hydropower Development Company Limited's (Chengdu, Sichuan) Jinping II Hydropower Station in the Sichuan province passed a full trial run-through of water on August 16, 2011, following the successful run-through in Diversion Tunnel No. 1 on June 6. This is another important milestone for the project, the State Development and Investment Corporation (SDIC) (Beijing) announced on August 24.

Diversion Tunnel No. 2 has a full length of 16.69 kilometers, with an average depth of about 1,500 to 2,000 meters and an excavation diameter of 13 meters. Construction of the tunnel was achieved using a drilling-and-blasting method. The inner diameter of the tunnel will be 11.8 meters, excluding the concrete lining, which varies from 40 to 60 centimeters. Fill grouting and high-pressure consolidation grouting is performed at the velocity of 4.11 meters per second after lining.

Jinping II Hydropower Station has the largest installed capacity of any hydropower station on the mainstream of the Yalong River, a major tributary of the Changjiang River, in Sichuan province. The project is downstream from the 3,600-megawatt (MW) Jinping I Hydropower Station. Through the excavation of four long power diversion tunnels pass through the Jinping Mountain, the project will be furnished with eight hydraulic turbine-generating units, each of 600 MW, by using the 310 meters of water drop from the great river bend in the Yalong River.

The diversion tunnel is designed by HydroChina Huadong Engineering Corporation (Hangzhou, Zhejiang) and contracted by China Railway Construction Group Company Limited (Beijing). Construction of the tunnel kicked off in 2007. After more than three years of hard work, the contractor has overcome many difficulties to ensure safe and fast progress on the tunnel's excavation. A successful run-through of the tunnel will pave a firm foundation for the commissioning of the first unit in 2012.
