Dong Energy Commissions Walney II Offshore Windfarm
The first of 51 Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) SWT 3.6-107 turbines at the Walney II offshore windfarm began delivering electricity to the U.K.'s national grid this week.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Europe (Galway, Ireland)--The first of 51 Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) SWT 3.6-107 turbines at the Walney II offshore windfarm began delivering electricity to the U.K.'s national grid this week. All 51 turbines at Walney II are expected to be fully operational and produce at a combined capacity of 183.5 megawatts (MW) by the end of 2011.
Together with Walney I, which became fully operational in May 2011, the Walney site has a total capacity of 367 MW. The windfarm is about 15kilometers off Walney Island, Cumbria, in the Irish Sea.
A third phase with a capacity of 750 MW is due to begin construction in 2015. Walney III will use larger turbines with a capacity of up to 6 MW.
Dong Energy A/S (Fredericia, Denmark) (50.1%), Scottish and Southern Energy (OTC:SSEZY) (SSE) (Perth, Scotland) (25.1%) and OPW (24.8%), a company jointly owned by Dutch pension administrator PGGM (Zeist, Netherlands) and Ampère Equity Fund, which is managed by Triodos Investment Management (Zeist, Netherlands), are the companies behind Walney Windfarms Limited. Dong is the leading partner in the construction and operational phases of the projects.

"We developed our techniques for faster and more cost-efficient installation methods in the challenging conditions in the Irish Sea. This is an important step in the continuing drive to reduce the cost of construction of offshore windfarms."
