Eastman Chemical Short-Lists E&C Firms for Major PET Expansion

Eastman Chemical Company (NYSE: EMN) (Kingsport, Tennessee) is planning a major expansion of its West Columbia, South Carolina, polyethylene terephthlate (PET) plant, through the addition of a new unit. The unit will use Eastmans new PET technology, called IntegRex, and will produce an estimated 350,000 metric tons per year, when complete in late 2006.
Eastman has established a short-list of lump-sum D+E+P+C/M contractors and plans to make a selection in Fall 2004, with an award expected in January 2005. The short-list of contractors includes Fluor Daniel Incorporated (Greenville, South Carolina), Lockwood Greene (Spartanburg, South Carolina), S&B (Houston, Texas), and BE&K (Newark, Delaware).
Eastman indicates this new technology will reduce the cost of converting paraxylene through PET resin by 15% and will eliminate the need for a solid stating unit to produce bottle grade PET resins.
