E&C Firm Selected for 50-Megawatt Gaia Power Biomass-Fired Plant in United Kingdom

Researched by Protel Associates Limited in alliance with Industrial Info Europe (Galway, Ireland)--The Stockton-on-Tees office of Aker Solutions E&C Limited (Stockton-on-Tees, England) has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract for the £200 million ($325 million) Gaia Power Biomass Power Station project to be located on 16 acres at the Billingham Reach Industrial Park in Billingham, England.

Gaia Power Tees Valley Limited (Yarm, England) was formed to build recycled wood-to-energy power plants across the United Kingdom. The first is planned for Billingham on the site of a former power station, with further sites being sought in the South East, North West and the Midlands. The 50-megawatt plant will incorporate conventional combustion and thermal cycle technology to generate electricity for the national grid and district heating.

Gaia Power and Aker Solutions are awaiting a planning permission decision from local authorities, which is expected during the fourth quarter of 2009, before forming a project team and commencing construction. Completion is scheduled for third quarter 2012.
