EDF Commissions Two Windfarms in Scotland

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--French energy giant Electricite de France SA (EPA:EDF) (EDF) (Paris, France) has commissioned two onshore windfarms in Scotland this week. The facilities have a combined generating capacity of 64 megawatts (MW).

EDF Energy Renewables, the U.K. renewables arm of EDF, has commissioned its first windfarm in Scotland at Longpark, near Galashiels. It is the largest U.K. renewable project for EDF Energy Renewables. The plant has 19 MM82 turbines from REpower Systems AG (ETR:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany), each with a capacity of 2.05 MW. The 38-MW windfarm is capable of generating enough electricity for approximately 19,000 homes and will offset carbon emissions by the equivalent of 43,000 tonnes.

"Opening this windfarm is a further step in developing Scotland's renewable energy infrastructure and a great example of how we are harnessing our natural geography to produce renewable energy," said the Secretary of State for Scotland, Michael Moore, at the opening.

"The energy generated here will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 43,000 tonnes. Investing in renewables is vital for our country and our economy, and the coalition government is committed to building a 'zero-waste' economy--so much so that we made it part of the coalition agreement published in May. It is also a rapidly expanding sector, and we are at the start of a renewable revolution which will open up many career choices for Scots," Moore said.

Christian Egal, CEO of EDF Energy Renewables, added: "Longpark is good news for EDF Energy Renewables and also for Scotland. It will contribute to the Scottish Government's ambitious renewables targets of 80% of electricity to be generated from renewable sources by 2020."

In addition, EDF Energies Nouvelles SA (EPA:EEN) (Paris), working with EDF Energy Renewables, opened the 26-MW Burnfoot Hill windfarm in central Scotland. Using 13 REpower turbines rated at 2 MW each, the windfarm is expected to be able to power up to 20,000 homes. EDF Energies Nouvelles has 227.2 MW of renewable capacity in the U.K.
