Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Electricite de France (EPA:EDF) (Paris, France) continues to expand production capacity for the supply of peaking demand with the commissioning of two combustion turbines at the Vaires-sur-Marne site, which had been closed since 2005. The units were commissioned on November 14.
The new diesel-fired 185-megawatt (MW) General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) turbines, which will run about 150 hours a year, are operated and controlled from EDF's Vitry-sur-Seine power station in the Ile-de-France region.
Vitry-sur-Seine, in operation since 1968, is equipped with two coal-fired steam turbines that produce 500 MW and one 125-MW diesel-fired combustion turbine that has been operational since January 2008. Beginning in August 2008, nine weeks of major maintenance works were performed on both units 3 and 4, and the pipes of Unit 3 were replaced.
Additionally, EDF also operates two 125-MW turbines located in Arrigui and one 200-MW unit at the Gennevilliers Power Station from the Vitry-sur-Seine station. The plans are to continue to expand this capacity, and to increase the units operated by the local utility in the Ile--de-France Region, with one more unit to be commissioned in Vaires-sur-Marne and two more in Montereau.
For the rest of France, peaking capacity increased in 2008 with 600-MW reconnected to the grid from the Porcheville Power Station at the beginning of the year and 700-MW with the reconnection of Unit 1 in Aramon Power Station in October.
