EDF Renewable Energy Announces Windfarm Addition at Spinning Spur in Texas Panhandle

Reports related to this article:

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Spinning Spur Wind Ranch is located in Oldham County, Texas, one of the windiest spots of the Texas Panhandle. The facility began commercial operations in December, and its first phase was dedicated in April 2013. To the surprise of many, EDF Renewable Energy, the owner of Spinning Spur I Wind Project and a subsidiary of EDF Energies Nouvelles (Paris, France), announced that it would be adding a second phase, Spinning Spur II.

Spinning Spur I consists of 70 Siemens SWT-2.3-101 Wind Turbines. The nameplate output capacity for Phase I is 161 megawatts (MW).

Wanzek Construction was the general contractor for Phase I. Cielo Wind Power (Austin, Texas), which helped in the development of Phase I, will help EDF Renewable Energy in the development of Spinning Spur II.

Construction is expected to begin in June, and the Spinning Spur II project should be complete by the summer of 2014. The general contractor should be picked in a couple of weeks. EDF is in negotiations with a shortlist of contractors that can provide turnkey services.

Spinning Spur II will consist of 87 General Electric 1.85-MW wind turbines. The project will cover some 16,000 acres and will pass through the Wildorado, Vega and Adrian townships. It is expected that once Phase II of the project is completed, it will provide renewable "green" energy to approximately 112,000 homes.

EDF Renewable Energy has a 15-year power purchase agreement with Southwestern Public Service Company, which is a subsidiary of Xcel Energy Incorporated (NYSE:XEL) (Monticello, Minnesota).

Google Incorporated (NASDAQ:GOOG) (Mountain View, California) has also made an equity investment of approximately $200 million in the Spinning Spur Wind Ranch.
