Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--French nuclear power major Electricite de France S.A. (EDF) (EPA: EDF) (Paris) is planning to invest 2 billion in Chooz Nuclear Power Station to extend the life of its nuclear reactors for another 20 years. Located at the North part of France in Champagne-Ardenne region, the 3,000-megawatt (MW) Chooz power station started commercial operation in the year 2000.
EDF is investing 50billion to enhance reliability and functioning of its existing nuclear reactors in France. Two units of 1,500 MW each at the Chooz plant would also be renovated under the same program. This would include the renovation and modernization (R&M) of Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems and setting up of essential safety protocol along with emergency power backup system.
Chooz Nuclear Power Station is equipped with two Alstom (EPA: ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France) Arabelle steam turbines and water-cooled generator sets and two Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR). The first reactor Chooz-A, with a capacity of 310 MW was taken for a shutdown in 1991 after completion of 22 years of operation.
The major turnarounds and renovations are scheduled during the next 10-year statutory outage, which is slated for 2020-21. Moreover, EDF is planning to set up a third generation European Pressurized Reactor (EPR) reactor at the Chooz site. Initial study for this project has already been completed, while the structural development work are expected to begin in 2016.
France has 58 nuclear reactors all of these are operated by EDF. With a total installed capacity of over 63 Gigawatt (GW) around 75% of the total power is produced in France. EDF is the world's largest producer of electricity and also biggest power Export Company in Europe. Headquartered in Paris, EDF operates a diverse portfolio of 120 Gigawatts (GW) of installed generation capacity through its plants spread across Europe, South America, North America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
