Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Duke Energy Corporation's (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) 630-megawatt (MW), coal-fired Edwardsport Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Generating Station (Knox County, Indiana) began commercial operations after two years of construction.
The New Edwardsport IGCC Generating Station has replaced the 160-MW Edwardsport Station built in 1918 that was retired in 2011. Duke Energy needed to find a way to burn coal more cleanly and to reduce other environmental emissions. An IGCC system works by converting coal into a gas called synthesis gas (or "syngas"), which is then burned to produce steam to drive a steam turbine, which produces electricity.
The process of gasification also includes the removal of particulate matter, mercury, and compounds of sulfur before the use of the syngas in a combustion turbine generator. Edwardsport Generating Station has two General Electric (NYSE:GE) MS7001FB combustion turbines attached to two Doosan Heavy Industries Heat Recovery System Generators (HRSG), a General Electric condensing reheat steam turbine, and a Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) 3516 emergency back-up generator.
