Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking approximately 5,600 projects worth more than $164.24 billion in the U.S. that have wrapped up or are drawing to a close toward the end of the year. Not surprisingly, the Power Industry, with more than $47.8 billion in 2013 project completions, leads in terms of value, followed by the Industrial Manufacturing Industry with $36.55 billion in projects, a large portion of which comes from high-dollar semiconductor manufacturing completions and light rail projects.

In fact, the highest value project to completed this year is Intel Corporation's (NASDAQ:INTC) $5 billion semiconductor wafer manufacturing plant in Chandler, Arizona. Construction on the project kicked off in mid-2011 and wrapped up earlier this year. CH2M HILL provided engineering on the project, while Hoffman Construction Company (Portland, Oregon) acted as general contractor.

The largest Power Industry project to be completed was Duke Energy Corporation's (NYSE:DUK) Edwardsport coal-fired integrated gasification combined-cycle power plant in Indiana. The 618-megawatt (MW) plant, which suffered several regulatory hurdles and cost overruns, entered commercial operation in June and ended up with a final price tag of more than $3.5 billion.

Click to view 2013 Project Completions Regionally, the Southwest and Great Lakes market regions led the U.S. in both the number and value of projects. Another coal-fired power plant leads the Southwest region for project value. The $1.5 billion, 900-MW Sandy Creek Energy Center was completed in the summer in Riesel, Texas.

While these large, blockbuster projects obviously draw the headlines, Industrial Info tracked more than 3,000 maintenance projects that also occurred in 2013, ranging in size from a $200,000 turnaround at an asphalt refinery in California to a $65 million turnaround at an olefins plant in Port Arthur, Texas. Together, these projects accounted for more than $8.5 billion in maintenance spending.
