Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Brazilian company Eletrosul (Florianopolis, Brazil), a subsidiary of power utility company Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras S.A. (NYSE:EBR) (Eletrobras) (Brasilia, Brazil), recently began commercial operations of the Passo São João hydropower plant. This new facility has a generating capacity of 77 megawatts (MW) and is between the towns of Roque Gonzales and Dezesseis Novembro, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, about 600 kilometers from Porto Alegre.

The facility has two 38.5-MW, vertical-axis Kaplan hydro turbine-generator sets, each furnished by Andritz Hydro GmBH (Vienna, Austria). The first turbine went into operation on March 21, and the second turbine should be operational by May this year. The project had an estimated total investment value of $325.9 million.

The plant is on the Ijui River and has a water reservoir area of 25.24 square kilometers. The power plant will generate enough renewable energy to power approximately 70,000 homes.

At the moment, Brazil has a hydro operating capacity of 88.69 gigawatts (GW). Another 24.54 GW is under construction, and 56.72 GW is in the planning stage. It is estimated that by 2020, Brazil could add a total of 71.16 GW of additional hydro capacity.
