Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Spanish power utility Endesa (NYSE:ELE) (Madrid, Spain) currently has 4,500 MW of CCGT (combined cycle gas turbine) projects underway in Spain which are scheduled to come on steam in the short and medium term. In addition the company has options to develop projects totaling 15,600 MW in new, natural gas fired CCGT plants for the domestic power market plus 1,600 MW in new, super critical technology, high efficiency plants fed with imported coal.
In addition to this major list of potential projects the company is involved in more than 1,000 MW of renewable energy projects in the development of pump storage stations and will develop another 2,500 MW of renewable energy over the next five years. Endesa also has 380 MW of projects for the co-combustion of biomass and coal in thermal power stations now in operation. This $27.6 million project leads the CENIT CO2 campaign to reduce emissions under Spains commitment to Kyoto Protocol targets. Techniques are being developed for the safe, long-term storage of CO2 in deep geological structures that have a high salt content.
Operations have just started in the test phase of the new As Pontes 800 MW CCGT plant, which is sited next to a 1,400 MW coal-fired plant. This $540 million plant comprises of two gas turbines and one steam turbine, with three independent generators giving it a high degree of, operational flexibility.
Construction has the go ahead for the 800 MW Besos CCGT plant and the 1,200 MW Compostilla power station is scheduled to start operation in the last quarter of 2010. The 400 MW gas fired La Pereda plant, which will benefit from the new regasification plant at the port of Gijon, is going ahead as is the Gerona 400 MW plant. Other projects in the companys project portfolio are at different stages of maturity and will be moved forward as circumstances dictate in the light of market and technology performance.
