Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The city of Denton, Texas, is on track to meet its "Renewable Denton Plan" by early 2019. Denton recently approved construction of the 225-megawatt (MW) Denton Energy Center, which will be located in an industrial park. Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) will serve as the design engineering firm and the owner's engineer on this project.
Denton Municipal Utilities has signed a major contract with Wärtsilä to supply 12 Wärtsilä 50SG internal combustion engines to produce a combined 225 MW of flexible power. The new facility will provide balancing power to the community, which is aiming to have 70% of its energy produced from renewable sources by 2019. Denton currently receives 40% of its energy from wind and solar power, which has been recognized by the American Public Power Association (Washington, D.C.) and the U.S. Department of Energy.
This new project will help balance the city's renewable baseload power with the highly efficient, quick-start, Wärtsilä internal combustion engines when wind and solar energy sources aren't available. The equipment will be delivered during the second half of 2017, when construction of the new facility is expected to start. The Wärtsilä solution will decrease the city's emissions by 78%, deliver reliable, affordable electricity to its customers, and save hundreds of millions of dollars in electricity production costs.
The project has a total investment value of $260 million and is expected to begin commercial operations in July 2018. When completed, the Denton Energy Center will be one of the largest power plants in North America using Wärtsilä internal combustion engines.
