Environmental Assessment for China Guodian's Zhentouba I Hydropower Station Receives Approval

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The environmental impact assessment (EIA) for China Guodian Corporation (Beijing) 720-megawatt (MW) Zhentouba I hydropower station recently received approval from the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), according to an announcement from the ministry on May 23.

The Zhentouba station, which is in the Jinkou district of Leshan City, is the 19th project in the cascade development scheme on Dadu River, a major tributary of the Changjiang River in southwest China's Sichuan province. Sichuan Dadu River Hydropower Development Company Limited (Chengdu, Sichuan), a subsidiary of GD Power Development Company Limited (SHA:600795) (Beijing), the listed flagship of China Guodian Corporation, is responsible for the development and future operations of the project.

The main purpose of the project will be power generation, with other diversified benefits in flood control, navigation, irrigation and water supply. The project will be adopted using a river-bed type development scheme. The power station will be furnished with four 180-MW hydro-turbine generating units, for a total installed capacity of 720 MW. Upon completion, annual power output of the project will be 3,290 gigawatt-hours.

Construction of the project comprises an 86.5-meter-high dam with a reservoir capacity of 46.9 million cubic meters, including the left-bank, non-overflow dam section; the river-bed powerhouse section; sluice and discharge gates; a fish way; and the right-bank, non-overflow dam section. The total investment in the coal-mine project will be about $1.29 billion. The investment for environment protection will be about $55.4 million, accounting for 4.29% of the total.

So far, the project is under site preparation. According to the schedule, the project will achieve river closure in November 2011. Construction on the main works is scheduled to begin by the end of this year, and the project is expected to begin operations in 2015.
