Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enviva LP (Bethesda, Maryland) has begun turning dirt and performing underground work on a new fuel pellet mill in Franklin, Virginia. The company is down to a short list of general contractors to install the production equipment for the estimated $75 million project and expects to decide who it will go with next month.
Meanwhile, preliminary work on the Southampton site is proceeding with underground utilities, electrical and sewer lines, and slip forms for the concrete production buildings. Construction is expected to take 18 months to complete, and the facility is expected to be producing fuel pellets by early 2014.
When complete, the plant will produce up to 454,000 metric tons of the processed biomass fuel pellets annually and will create 70 jobs for the area. The pellets will be marketed to Europe and shipped via a new deepwater terminal at the Port of Chesapeake, just outside Norfolk, Virginia.
The company is also looking at development of its Northampton facility near Garysburg, North Carolina. When complete, the Northampton plant will produce 500,000 metric tons per year of fuel pellets.
