Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enviva LP's (Bethesda, Maryland) planned fuel export terminal at the Port of Wilmington in Brunswick County, North Carolina, is being met with local opposition.
Several homeowners in Sunset Park, the community near the proposed development, held a meeting Thursday in hopes of convincing Enviva, a wood-pellet fuel company, to cancel their plans to build two large storage domes near their neighborhood. But they learned the process cannot be stopped.
Residents complain that the two proposed, 170-foot-tall pellet storage domes are too close to the neighborhood and voiced concerns that increased truck traffic and noise associated with the conveyor system would be a nuisance. Some are even saying that the shadows from the domes could reduce sunlight in the evening by as much as 50 minutes.
The estimated $35 million project involves the development of an 865,000-ton-per-year export terminal, with a ship berth that would send fuel pellets from the company's plants in Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia to export markets in Europe.
Construction is expected to begin this spring, and the facility is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2016.
Enviva also plans to construct four additional mills in North and South Carolina this year, with completion scheduled for the 2016 calendar year.
