Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - German energy major, E.ON AG (OTC:EONGY) (Dusseldorf, Germany), has kicked off construction work on its new offshore wind operations base on the island of Heligoland in the German North Sea.

The 1,800 square metre building will provide space for offices, changing rooms and storage. Up to 50 staff working in shifts will support the operation of the Amrumbank West windfarm by boat and helicopter. It will be ready in August next year. Other work will include new service and storage buildings as well as outdoor storage areas and jetties being built at the southern port. The 288-megawatt (MW) Amrumbank West windfarm is located 35-kilometers north of the island. Costing €1 billion ($1.3 billion) to construct its will sport 80 Siemens turbines rated at 3.6 MW each and generate enough power for around 300,000 homes.

"Heligoland is very conveniently located and therefore an ideal maintenance base for our offshore windfarm -- that way we don't have to have a hotel ship or a manned offshore platform next to the wind turbines," commented Dominik Schwegmann, the Amrumbank West wind farm project manager. "We are planning to be on Heligoland for the long term. The lease for the land has an initial term of 28 years. We are pleased that the island will benefit so much from this infrastructure upgrade."

The move comes a month after RWE Innogy, part of RWE AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany), stared work on its own centre for maintenance and operations on Heligoland. For additional information, see July 31, 2013, article - Construction Begins at Germany's Offshore Wind Island.

Along with WindMW GmbH (Bremerhaven, Germany), the three companies joined forces last year to announce the proposed building of a giant maintenance and operations base for their combined offshore windfarms at the southern port on Heligoland. The island is set to become the hub of Germany's offshore wind plans, servicing three windfarms with a combined generating capacity of 871-megawatts (MW). The windfarms are RWE's Nordsee Ost (295 MW), E.ON's Amrumbank West (288 MW) and the Süd and Meerwind Ost (288 MW), which is being built by WindMW.
