Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--A year after the first turbine was installed, E.ON AG (OTC: EONGY) (Düsseldorf, Germany) has officially opened its $1.4 billion Amrumbank West offshore windfarm in the German North Sea.

The windfarm, which had an original generating capacity of 288 -megawatts (MW), now produces 302 MW after the 80 turbines, each with a capacity of 3.6 MW, from Siemens AG (FWB:SIE) (Munich, Germany) were recently boosted to a top power of 3.77-MW each. Located 35 kilometers north of Helgoland Island, it can supply about 300,000 households with renewable energy while reducing CO2 emissions by more than 740,000 metric tonnes. The windfarm is now exporting full power via the 690-MW HelWin2 undersea grid link.

The opening was attended by E.ON Chief Executive Officer Johannes Teyssen, Hamburg's First Mayor Olaf Scholz and Germany Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy Uwe Beckmeyer.

Teyssen called for the continued expansion of offshore wind and said: "Every energy has its time and the time for expanding offshore wind is definitely now. Offshore will be needed if we want to achieve the targets of the energy transition."

Scholz added: "Amrumbank West is another lighthouse project for wind power at sea, which must be followed by further offshore wind projects to make sure the energy industry and industrial policy potential of offshore wind is not left untapped. Hamburg and the federal states of northern Germany support plans to push ahead with the network infrastructure and the construction of further wind farms. Clean power is needed all over Germany and green electricity from the North Sea gives the German energy transition the necessary support."

The windfarm will help cement Germany's position as Europe's largest wind power nation. This week, figures from the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), showed that for 2015 Germany installed over 6 gigawatts (GW) of wind projects--47% of the European total. Germany remains the European Union (EU) country with the largest installed capacity at 45 -GW, followed by Spain (23 GW), the U.K. (14 GW) and France (10 GW). Today, 16 EU nations each have more than 1 GW of wind capacity installed, while nine of those can each boast more than 5 GW.
