Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). If you are still wondering if aluminum bottles are going to catch on with consumers, look no further than Youngstown, Ohio, to find the answer. That’s where EXAL Corporation (Youngstown, Ohio) will begin an approximately $300 million global expansion of aluminum bottle and container manufacturing capabilities. Aluminum bottles are taking off with companies like Anheuser Busch, Pepsi, and Coke offering products in aluminum bottles.

EXAL is clearing a site adjacent to its existing plant to construct a 145,000 square foot building addition that will house six new aluminum extrusion lines, effectively doubling the plant’s capacity from 300 million to 600 million extruded aluminum containers per year.

EXAL has awarded a design-build general construction contract to B&B Contractors & Developers Incorporated (Youngstown, Ohio). B&B Contractors has been involved with EXAL since its inception, building the original plant in 1994 and three subsequent expansions. Dickey Electrical (Youngtown, Ohio) will provide electrical services for the project. Equipment for the production lines is scheduled to be delivered from Europe in November 2005.

EXAL is also evaluating options to build a third Youngstown plant on a 70-acre site in the Salt Springs Road Industrial Park, a Brownfield development. This $70 million project will convert aluminum coils into containers for pharmaceutical applications.

EXAL also plans to add six extruded aluminum container lines at its plants in France, The Netherlands, and Argentina at a cost of $150 million. In 2004, EXAL acquired the Boxal Group with plants in France and The Netherlands from Alcan Packaging, making EXAL the world’s largest extruded aluminum container manufacturer.
