Expro Wins Contract to Drill Trion Deepwater Field in Mexico

Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Expro Group Holdings (Houston, Texas) has signed a three-year contract with Woodside Energy Group (Perth) and Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) (Mexico City, Mexico) to support the development of the Trion deepwater field, located offshore Tampico, Mexico, in the Perdido Fold Belt area.

Investments in the development, which is Mexico's first deepwater asset, are projected to exceed US$10 billion. Expro's services will encompass tubular running and cementing services, as well as TRS casing, completion and drilling support.

"With our extensive track record and a reputation as a trusted provider of well construction solutions, we are proud to play a key role in this world-class development," said Jeremy Angelle, the vice president of well construction for Expro.

The Trion Field would be Mexico's first deepwater asset, with depths of about 2,500 meters. Pemex and Woodside Energy have set a first oil target for 2028, with a peak production rate of 100,000 barrels of oil per day (BBL/d). Estimated reserves at the asset are set at 485 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE).

The total investment for the project is forecasted at US$10.4 billion. The Australian company holds a 60% stake in the asset and is the operator, while Pemex owns the remaining 40%.

The development of the assets will help Pemex to balance a decline in its oil production. Over the past few years, the Mexican company has faced the natural decline of some of its largest oil fields, such as Cantarell and the Ku-Maloob-Zaap complex.

However, more recently, Pemex has focused its upstream development on shallow waters and onshore fields, making Trion a different trend.

The previous presidential administration of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador halted years of production declines, thanks to the development of assets such as Quesqui. Yet, a recent report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) suggests Mexico's production volumes could drop to 1.3 million BBL/d by 2030.
