Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Canadian mineral exploration company Guyana Goldfields Incorporated (TSX:GUY) (Toronto, Ontario) is planning to build a run-of-river hydroelectric plant with a capacity of 15-20 megawatts in north central Guyana.
At the beginning of the year, the company announced that the technical and economic feasibility studies for the Cuyuni hydro project, to be located on the Cuyuni River in the Guyana Shield of the Amazon Craton, were awarded to international consultancy firm MWH (Broomfield, Colorado). Guyana Goldfields is equally sharing the cost of the study with the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank (Washington, D.C.).
The Cuyuni project is part of the Aurora gold project, a multimillion-ounce gold discovery. Infrastructure construction of the project is expected to start in 2012. The project will entail the operation of open-pit and underground mines, mineral processing to recover gold, and the construction of a hydroelectric plant to provide power to the processing plant. In addition, an access road and a wharf to service the operation will also be constructed.
