Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Though somewhat delayed, production has started at the Winterfell development in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, where Kosmos Energy (NYSE:KOS) (Dallas, Texas) is envisioning a five-well campaign.

Kosmos on Wednesday said it achieved first oil nonetheless from the first two wells at the Winterfell prospect in the energy-rich Green Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico. Initial production was listed at a combined 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (Boe/d).

Drilling at a third well, which is expected to be online by the third quarter, has already started. A five-well campaign is envisioned for Winterfell.

"With high-margin barrels, low-carbon intensity and a quick expected payback, Winterfell has the right characteristics for Kosmos' portfolio," said Andrew Inglis, the company's chairman and chief executive officer. "Kosmos is eager to continue developing the greater Winterfell area, which we believe has significant future upside potential."

The United States is the world's largest crude oil producer. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical arm of the Department of Energy, said in its monthly market report for June that total U.S. crude oil production should average 13.2 million barrels per day (BBL/d) this year, a 2% increase from year-ago levels.

Reserves in the U.S. territorial waters of the Gulf of Mexico account for about 15% of the nation's total crude oil production and 5% of the total gas output. Output offshore is also considered low-carbon relative to shale oil production.

The Winterfell field was discovered in 2021 in deep waters. The field is being developed using a 13-mile tieback to a host platform.

Kosmos said Winterfell has a pre-drill gross resource estimate of 135 million Boe. Inglis last year said the upside potential could be as high as 200 million Boe. The company holds a minority stake in Winterfell, alongside operator Beacon Offshore Energy, Westlawn Americas Offshore, Red Willow, Alta Mar Energy and CSL Exploration.

Elsewhere, Kosmos is adding compression and umbilical systems at the Odd Job production field in Mississippi Canyon blocks 214 and 215, where production could come online this year.

Kosmos also is considering the proposed Gettysburg grassroot oil & gas field development in De Soto Canyon Block 398, which would include two production wells, a pipeline connecting the field to a yet-to-be-determined facility and supporting subsea infrastructure.

The company said it believes production would total more than 42,000 barrels per day of crude oil and condensate, and 19 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas.
